• Henry VIII

  Henry VIII has gone down in history as a powerful, passionate English king. In his life, he married six times and fathered three future monarchs. But perhaps most incredibly of all, he changed religion in England forever by establishing the Church of England.

  Henry was born the second son of King Henry VII and Elizabeth of York in 1491. But when Henry’s elder brother died in 1502, Henry became heir to the English throne. Seven years later, at the age of 18, Henry VIII became king.

• Roman Myths

  Romulus and Remus were twins who were raised by a wolf. In 753 BC they moved away from their home in Alba Longa to build a new city. But they fought over the site and name of the future city and Romulus slew Remus. Romulus then founded the city of Rome.

• French Revolution

  The French Revolution came about because of a long-held displeasure at how the rich lived. While the rich lived comfortably, the common people were forced to pay taxes too high for them to pay. And there was not enough food produced for them to eat. French peasants became so impoverished that visitors to France said many of them were as skinny as skeletons.

  In May 1789, King Louis XVI called a meeting of priests, lords and common people. At the meeting it was clear the common people wanted more power. They felt they deserved it as they were the only class required to pay taxes.

• Volcanoes

  A volcano is an opening in the earth’s surface through which molten rock, gases and debris can escape. The mound commonly associated with volcanoes is what remains after eruptions have collected and hardened around this opening.

  Volcanoes exist in the mythology of numerous countries, such as Iceland and Japan. Many past cultures, such as the Greeks and the Romans, also had volcano mythology. In fact, the Romans invented the words ‘volcano’, taking the word from the island of Vulcano just off the south-west coast of Italy.

• Civil Rights
