Hemophilia
Learn about the condition of Hemophilia with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
The term "hemophilia" describes hemorrhagic, or bleeding, disorders. The most common of these disorders is caused by a deficiency of Protein in the blood known as 'blood-clotting factor'. There needs to be at least 30% of the clotting factor for the blood to clot normally. Less than 30% results in the blood being slow to clot, causing bleeding for a longer time than someone with a regular amount of clotting factor.
Internal bleeding, usually into joints and muscles, is the most common form of bleeding sustained by those suffering from hemophilia. This can result from an incident such as a fall, or even spontaneously, with no apparent cause.

Penicillin
Learn about the discovery of Penicillin with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
When Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1928, it was a lucky accident. He didn’t realize at the time that penicillin would dramatically change the face of medicine and the pharmaceutical industry.
Fleming was a researcher studying the natural antibacterial substances produced by the body. He had been working with the bacteria that caused boils. To study the bacteria he grew colonies of it on plates. He later took a holiday leaving plates of bacteria to grow while he was away. On returning from his holiday, he noticed a mould growing on one of the plates. Colonies of the bacteria, which should have been growing around the mould, had died off.

Learn about the history of The Bubonic Plague with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
Bubonic plague is widely regarded as being responsible for two of the most infamous plagues in recorded history - the Black Death in the mid-fourteenth century and the great plague of London in 1665.
The causative organism of modern-day plague was discovered independently in 1894 by two bacteriologists: the Swiss born Dr. Alexandre Yersin and Dr. Shibasaburo Kitasato from Japan. Both were conducting research in Hong Kong during the third plague pandemic then occurring in Asia. Kitasato was working with the backing of the British authorities and had access to autopsies of plague victims at Kennedy Town Hospital.

Epidemics
Learn about Epidemics with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
Epidemics are important to us as humans because they affect our very survival. Knowing what they are and how to control them have been of interest to us for centuries.A simple explanation of the difference between an epidemic and a pandemic would be to say that an epidemic is the large-scale transmission of an illness, whereas a pandemic is an epidemic that spreads across several countries. Until relatively recently‚ before advancements in science‚ most people believed epidemics were a punishment from God. There has been a large degree of mystery surrounding the spread of illnesses.

REM Sleep
Learn about REM sleep with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
REM is an important component of sleep. But sleep itself is a difficult phenomenon to study, because it is such an insular process. Dreams in particular are highly elusive for the researcher of sleep. As dreaming is a "state of mind", theories concerning it are frustratingly convoluted and highly theory-based, with any advancement unlikely to be supported by hard evidence. However, what scientists can do is measure the physical reactions that take place in our bodies and by our bodies when we are sleeping. This helps us understand what happens to us when we sleep and what REM is all about.

The Internet
Learn about the invention of The Internet with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
The story of the Internet begins in the early 1960s, when Russia launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial earth satellite. Afraid of the technological potential of the Russians, the United States Department of Defense formed the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), in order to develop US science and technology, and in particular its application in the military.
In order to share information between different US military and research institutions, a network was established between different computers. A government agency called RAND developed the idea of a decentralized network - so if one location was attacked, the others would still be able to connect to each other.
