Murphy's Law
Learn about Murphy's Law with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
Murphy's Law is a tongue-in-cheek and rather pessimistic adage of eight simple words: Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. The translation of these words into "Murphy's Law" was in honour of US aerospace engineer Edward Aloysius Murphy Junior. Legend has it that in 1949 Murphy made an offhand comment to his colleagues while working at an Air Force Base in California. His team was testing human tolerance for g-forces during rapid deceleration. The experiments involved Air Force officer John Stapp being strapped into a sled moving at great speed. As the sled decelerated, an instrument was supposed to take readings of the g-forces Stapp experienced.Perfect to listen to while commuting, exercising, shopping or cleaning the house.. iMinds brings knowledge to your MP3 with 8 minute information segments to whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind.

Stockholm Syndrome
Learn about Stockholm Syndrome with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
At first glance two of the 1970's most notorious bank robberies would seem to have nothing in common. They occurred eight months apart, for different motives, on opposite sides of the globe. But these two incidents would prove seminal to the development and understanding of a curious and once controversial psychological condition; Stockholm Syndrome.
On the 15th of April 1974, the Sunset District branch of the Hibernia Bank in San Francisco was robbed. Security footage showed a young, attractive urban guerrilla brandishing a machine gun and ordering people in the bank to lie face down on the ground.

Tragedy of the Commons
Learn about the Tragedy of the Commons with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
The Tragedy of the Commons is a situation in which a jointly-owned resource is overused or destroyed because each person takes more than they would if the resource was privately owned. With each individual acting independently, the combined pressure on the resource exceeds what is in the interests of the community as a whole. The term was coined in 1967 by Garrett Hardin, a biologist from the University of California, in a famous article in the journal Science.
According to Hardin, there are some kinds of problems which society cannot resolve through technology, but which instead require a wholesale change in morality and behavior - what we might now call a cultural shift.

Eternal Truths
Learn the philosophy of the Eternal Truths with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
‘Eternal truths’ are ideas that are not proved or demonstrated, but are nonetheless believed due to their apparent self-evidence. Acceptance of such facts is believed to come about through reason. Those who believe in eternal truths define them as ideas or statements so undeniable that proof is unnecessary. For example, the sentence, “I think, therefore I am”, is an eternal truth, as no further proof of existence is required. The very fact that we think, shows that we exist.
One of the foremost European scholars of the Enlightenment was René Descartes, who lived from 1596 until 1650. Descartes wrote extensively on eternal truths, and laid the foundation for many scholars to follow.

Deja Vu
Learn about the feeling of Déjà Vu with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
When Charles Dickens wrote in his 1850 novel David Copperfield about ‘a feeling, that comes over us occasionally, of what we are saying and doing having been said and done before’, he may well have been referring to the experience of déjà vu. When the popstar Madonna took the lead role in the 1985 film Desperately Seeking Susan, her character referred to her emerging snippets of memory after a head injury as exactly that. But even if it feels like you have experienced something before, is this always an experience of déjà vu?

l'esprit de l'escalier
Learn about the feeling of l'Esprit de l'Escalier with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
There’s nothing like a good comeback. It’s witty, snappy and completely devastating to your verbal sparring partner. A woman once said to US President Calvin Coolidge: “I’ve made a bet with a friend that I can get you to say at least three words to me this evening. What do you have to say to that?” Coolidge looked at her and calmly replied: “You lose.”
But how many times have you gone completely blank when arguing with someone, only to think of the perfect comeback an hour later? It’s too late, of course. More than anything, you wish you could wind back time and deliver your riposte at the perfect moment. That’s l’esprit de l’escalier.
