Below are the descriptions for each of the lessons included in the series:
-
Alg1-Simplifying 1- Adding & Subtracting Integers
This lesson covers the idea of adding integers. Students review the addition and subtraction of positive and negative integers using a number line, where a positive integer represents a move to the right, and a negative integer represents a move to the left. Students learn that minus a negative can be thought of as plus a positive.

Alg1-Simplifying 2-Multiplying & Dividing Integers
This lesson covers the idea of integer multiplication. Students review the multiplication and division of positive and negative integers. The rules for multiplying integers are as follows: positive times positive equals positive, positive times negative equals negative, negative times positive equals negative, negative times negative equals positive. The rules for dividing integers are as follows: positive divided by positive equals positive, positive divided by negative equals negative, negative divided by positive equals negative, negative divided by negative equals positive.

Alg 1: Simplifying 3- Order of Operations
This lesson covers the idea of order of operation. Students learn to use the following order of operations when simplifying: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, and Addition/Subtraction (PEMDAS). Note that multiplication and division are done based on order of appearance from left to right in the problem, and addition and subtraction are done based on order of appearance from left to right in the problem.

Alg 1: Simplifying 4- Evaluating Expressions
This lesson covers the idea of evaluating expressions. Students learn to evaluate expressions by substituting the given integers in for the variables in the given expression, then simplifying. Students also learn to use parentheses when substituting.

Alg 1: Simplifying 5- Combining like Terms
This lesson covers the idea of combining like terms. Students learn to add or subtract terms that involve variables by combining like terms. Like terms are terms with exactly the same variable factors. For example, 5x and 3x are like terms. However, 7x and 9y are not like terms, and neither are 8x and 8x^2. In the problem 2x + 3x + 4, only the 2x and 3x can be combined, because they are like terms, so the expression can be simplified to 5x + 4. Students also learn that the number in front of the variable is called the coefficient, and when there is no coefficient in front of the variable the coefficient is understood to be 1.

Alg 1: Simplifying 6- Distributive Property
This lesson covers the idea of distributive property. Students learn the distributive property, which states that a(b + c) = ab + ac. In other words, the number or variable that is outside the set of parentheses "distributes" through the parentheses, multiplying by each of the numbers inside. Note that a negative sign outside a set of parentheses can be thought of as a negative 1, so a negative 1 distributes through the parentheses.

Algebra 1: Simplifying 7-Simplifying Expressions
This lesson covers the idea of simplifying expressions. Students learn to solve problems using the distributive property as the first step, then combining like terms. Students also learn to change minus signs to plus negatives in order to avoid making common errors with signs when distributing.
