In this 19-lesson series, we'll learn the basics of waves. We'll start with an introduction and then move on to examine simple waves on ropes. In so doing, we'll look at all of the measurements that characterize a wave, including its frequency, wavelength, wave speed, energy, and power. We'll also look at how to calculate each of these and what equations relate these and other measures associated with waves.

In the next couple lessons, we'll look at results when waves are combined or overlapped in some way. We'll first focus on the ideas of reflection, transmission and superposition. Then, we'll move on to look at the definition and types of interference.

In the following five lessons, we'll look at standing waves. After an introduction to standing waves, we'll consider standing waves on a string (transverse standing waves) and longitudinal standing waves.

The next five lessons will cover sound waves, the properties of soundwaves, the use of Fourier Analysis, and both intensity and loudness. Last, we'll look at the physics and explanations behind sound wave interference, beating (or beats), and the doppler effect.

This lesson was selected from a broader, comprehensive course, Physics I. This course and others are available from Thinkwell, Inc. The full course can be found at http://www.thinkwell.com/student/product/physics. The full course covers kinematics, dynamics, energy, momentum, the physics of extended objects, gravity, fluids, relativity, oscillatory motion, waves, and more. The course features two renowned professors: Steven Pollock, an associate professor of Physics at the University of Colorado at Boulder and Ephraim Fischbach, a professor of physics at Purdue University.
