Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh on 22 May 1859 of Scottish and Irish ancestry. He studied medicine at Edinburgh University. This background gave him the knowledge to be able to construct Sherlock Holmes’ great understanding of forensics. Conan Doyle’s first short story was published in 1883.
