This lesson focuses on the movement 'Single Whip'. This Tai Chi Posture is also repeated many times throughout the Yang Style Tai Chi Long Form. It is comprised of hooking hand which resembles the hand holding a whip before it is cracked. This lesson shows a close-up of the hands, and footwork to assist you in learning.

Single Whip name comes from the posture looking like someone about to crack a whip with one hand.

My name is Randy Brown. I've been training/teaching Tai Chi for over 10 years. I also hold a 6th degree Black Belt and Master Instructor title in Praying Mantis Kung Fu, and a Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

I am extremely passionate about martial arts and love to share my knowledge with others so they may reap the benefits to their lives, that I have received in mine.

After learning Tai Chi, I noticed the difficulties many people had in learning it. I became obsessed with finding easier ways to teach it. I recognized that as a student of Tai Chi, we want to spend our time gaining the benefits from practicing it, rather than trying to remember choreography or deal with coordination...

Single Whip - when performing this move, focus on shifting the weight from one leg to the other to assist in the transition. Maintain proper Tai Chi posture throughout the movement (see Lesson 1 transcript for details). Fingers should be extended outward but not tense.

As you transition to the hooking hand (Guo) keep your elbow down, shoulder down, and bend the wrist. The hook should be the thumb and the index finger touching like you are holding someones wrist in your hand.

The left arm performs a ward-off action as you transition your weight to the bow stance. In the final phase of shifting 70% of your weight to the left leg, your hand changes from the ward-off to the seated palm. Palm should be alive not empty and lifeless. Eyes should be looking over the left hand.
